Is SEO Dead, or Are You Just Bad at It?

There’s a lot of noise right now about SEO being dead. That it’s a channel with nothing left in it. That the traffic, the business, the revenue, all of it, is gone.

I’ve been doing this for 9+ years, and I want to say clearly: it isn’t true.

The people pushing this narrative tend to fall into one of two camps. Either they were never actually good at SEO and are relieved to have an excuse, or they have something to sell that benefits from the panic. I think most people in this industry know exactly who I’m talking about.

That noise hasn’t helped anyone. If anything, it’s done real damage. Leadership teams got spooked or misled by it, budgets got pulled based on bad information, and a lot of that eventually trickled down into layoffs for people who were doing good work. Hysteria is not a strategy, and it’s cost the industry more than it’s taught it.

So, Is SEO Dead?

Here’s my actual answer, the short version: SEO is not dead. It’s evolved.

Evolution always looks like a threat before it looks like an opportunity. Right now, users aren’t just searching on Google. They’re asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude the same questions they used to type into a search bar. That’s not the death of search. That’s search showing up in more places than it used to, which means there are more places to be found, not fewer.

Not Just for Big Brands

This isn’t just an opportunity for publishers or big brands. It’s an opportunity for businesses of every size, and for the marketing agencies and SEOs who are willing to actually learn how these systems work instead of complaining that the ground moved.

We’ve Seen This Movie Before

I keep coming back to the same comparison: this is what happened when social media showed up. At first, having a social profile was a checkbox exercise, something businesses did because it felt necessary, not because it drove anything. Then it became one of the biggest pieces of the marketing pie, and now it drives meaningful traffic and revenue on its own. AI search is on the same trajectory. The businesses and professionals who take it seriously now are going to own that channel the same way early, competent social marketers ended up owning theirs.

This is the new game, and it rewards the same thing every shift in this industry has always rewarded: adaptation. That goes for businesses and for the people who advise them. If you don’t adapt, you don’t get to sit this one out. You get left behind while someone else eats your share.

If you want to talk about what any of this means for your SEO or your AI search visibility, let’s talk.
